Stray light is the reason your Dob doesn't look like the eyepiece view you expected.
Every open-tube Newtonian has the same weakness: the front of the tube is a wide-open aperture pointed at the sky — and at everything else. A neighbor's porch light, a passing headlight, the Moon 40° away. That light spills down the tube wall, scatters, and lands on your secondary. You never see the source. You just see a view that's flat, milky, and low-contrast, and you blame the seeing.
The Farpoint Light Shield extends the tube optically without extending it physically. Flexible, non-reflective black plastic snaps into the front of the OTA and hooks onto the spider vanes — no tools, no adhesive, no drilling, about ten seconds. It absorbs light instead of bouncing it, so the shield never becomes the problem it's solving.
What you notice at the eyepiece
- A darker sky background. The first thing anyone reports.
- Better contrast on faint targets — galaxy arms, nebula edges, dark lanes.
- Cleaner planetary detail when the Moon is up nearby.
- Less dew on the secondary. The shield slows radiative cooling at the tube opening, typically buying an extra hour or two.
- Usable views from a driveway or suburban site that used to be a lost cause.
Why a light shield is the cheapest upgrade you can make
Contrast is what your eye actually resolves. A shield that restores contrast lost to stray light does more for a suburban observer than a premium eyepiece, and costs less than a Plössl. You bought a 10" telescope; this is how you see 10" worth of sky.
The catch is that you can't see the problem you're solving. Stray light doesn't cast a visible glare in the field. It raises the sky background floor uniformly, which reads to the observer as "meh conditions" or "my mirror needs collimating." Refractors ship with dew shields. Cassegrains have baffle tubes. Newtonians got neither, because a longer tube costs money to ship. This is the missing piece the design assumed you'd add.
