Farpoint FDA System · Piggyback Camera Mount

Aim a piggyback camera anywhere in the sky — from any D-size bar.

The Farpoint FDA Ball Head Camera Adapter (FDABHCM) pairs our quick-release Dovetail Accessory Adapter with a mounted ball head. Clamp it to any D-size (Losmandy-style) dovetail bar, lock your camera into the ball head, and frame wide-field shots independently of where the telescope points — lock the ball, and shoot.

Because it rides on the FDA quick-release base, the whole camera assembly snaps on and off your scope in seconds, tool-free.

Prefer a fixed camera platform without the ball head? See the Dovetail Camera Mount Quick Release Adapter.

One twist takes it all off. The ball head rides on the same quick-release FDA base as the rest of the system — the whole camera assembly comes off the scope in seconds when the session ends.

Frequently Asked Questions

What cameras will it hold?

Any camera with a standard tripod socket mounts to the ball head — DSLRs, mirrorless bodies, and camera-lens combinations for wide-field piggyback astrophotography.

Ball head or the FDCM camera mount — which should I choose?

Choose the ball head if you want to aim and frame the camera freely, independent of where the telescope points. Choose the FDCM Camera Mount if you want the simplest, most rigid fixed platform — the camera follows the bar's orientation.

Will it fit my dovetail bar?

The FDA base clamps to D-size (Losmandy-style) dovetail bars only — not the narrower V-size (Vixen-style) bars. Not sure which standard you have? Our telescope dovetail guide shows how to tell them apart in seconds.
