Half-Bracket Tie-Down Kit · Designed for the HD Shorty

If you own the HD Shorty Wheeley Bar — this is your tie-down kit.

The JMI Half-Bracket Tie-Down Kit was engineered specifically for the HD Shorty Wheeley Bar. The Shorty's compact frame doesn't clear the geometry of the full-length brackets used on our larger Wheeley Bars — so we built a shorter ("half") bracket that fits the Shorty cleanly while delivering the same tip-prevention security.

The Half-Bracket version isn't just for Shorty owners, though. It also fits the Standard Medium, HD Medium, HD Large, and AP Pier Mount Wheeley Bars — same compatibility list as the full-bracket kit. So if you have multiple bars (or might in the future), the Half-Bracket Kit gives you broader coverage. Made in the USA by JMI, part of the CXB Astro family.

HD Shorty owners: this is your kit. The full-bracket Tie-Down Kit (TPWTDBK) does not fit the Shorty's compact frame — you need this Half-Bracket version. At $99, it's cheap insurance against a tipped tripod and a fallen telescope.

Why a Separate Shorty Kit?

The HD Shorty was built to be the most compact, lowest-profile Wheeley Bar in the JMI lineup — ideal for shorter telescope tripods and observers who want the wheels closer to the ground. That compact frame doesn't leave room for the full-length brackets used on the Medium, HD Medium, HD Large, and AP Pier Mount Bars. Rather than ask Shorty owners to skip the tie-down (and risk a tipped scope), JMI engineered this Half-Bracket version with shorter geometry that clears the Shorty's frame while delivering identical tie-down security — same ratchet strap, same protection, just shorter brackets.

Why You Need a Tie-Down Kit

Wheeley Bars are inherently difficult to tip over — the wide footprint and low ground clearance make the bar itself very stable. But the tripod sitting on top of the bar is a different story:

  • Tall mounts (German equatorial heads, fork mounts) raise the center of gravity well above the bar's footprint.
  • Heavy OTAs (large refractors, SCTs, dew shields full of dew) shift mass to one side as the scope tracks across the sky.
  • Side loads — bumping the scope at the eyepiece, cables snagging, wind gusts, an observer leaning on the mount — can topple a tripod that's only sitting in its receptacles.
  • Towing the bar across uneven pavement transfers movement up through the bar to the tripod.

A fallen telescope is one of the most expensive accidents in the hobby. The Tie-Down Kit eliminates the failure mode entirely — strap once, observe with confidence.

Installation

The half-brackets bolt to your Wheeley Bar using the bar's existing leveling-screw and frame hardware — no drilling, no extra fasteners required. Once the brackets are in place, route the ratchet strap over your tripod head (between the mount base and the OTA, or just below the mount) and pull it snug with the cam lock. The first install typically takes about 10 minutes. After that, the brackets stay on the bar and securing your tripod for each session is a 30-second job.

Have a Larger Wheeley Bar?

If you own a Standard Medium, HD Medium, HD Large, or AP Pier Mount Wheeley Bar — either kit will work for you. The full-bracket Tie-Down Kit (TPWTDBK) is the default choice for those bars; this Half-Bracket version is the natural pick if you have multiple bars (one being a Shorty) and want one kit that fits everything you own. Both kits use the same ratchet-strap mechanism and provide the same security.

Frequently Asked Questions

I have an HD Shorty Wheeley Bar — which tie-down kit do I need?

This one — the Half-Bracket Tie-Down Kit. The Shorty's compact frame doesn't clear the geometry of the full-length brackets used on our larger Wheeley Bars, so we engineered this shorter ("half") bracket version specifically for the Shorty. The full-bracket kit (TPWTDBK) is the wrong choice for HD Shorty owners.

Can I use this Half-Bracket kit on my non-Shorty Wheeley Bar?

Yes — the Half-Bracket Kit also fits the Standard Medium, HD Medium, HD Large, and AP Pier Mount Wheeley Bars. If you only own one of those bars, the full-bracket Tie-Down Kit is the typical default choice (longer brackets for a stiffer hold). If you own multiple bars and one is a Shorty, the Half-Bracket Kit is the simpler one-kit-fits-all solution.

What's the difference between the half-brackets and the full-length brackets?

Bracket length, primarily. The full-length brackets used on the standard Tie-Down Kit are longer and grip the tripod from a wider span; the half-brackets are shorter to clear the HD Shorty's compact frame. Both use the same steel construction, the same heavy-duty ratchet strap, and the same mount-base tie-down geometry — your tripod is secured exactly the same way once strapped.

How long does installation take?

Most observers complete the first installation in about 10 minutes. The half-brackets bolt to your Wheeley Bar using existing hardware — no drilling, no extra fasteners to source. After the brackets are in place, securing your tripod for each session is a 30-second job: route the ratchet strap, pull it snug, lock the cam.

Will the Half-Bracket Kit fit any astronomy tripod?

The bracket geometry is designed for the tripod-leg footprint that fits in your Wheeley Bar's receptacles, so as long as your tripod fits the bar in the first place, the kit will accommodate it. The ratchet strap is long enough to reach over standard astronomy mounts (Celestron, Sky-Watcher, iOptron, Losmandy, Astro-Physics, Meade). For unusually tall or wide mounts — large fork mounts or custom builds — email support@cxbastro.com with your setup details first.
