Dobsonian Telescope Wheels & Mobility Solutions
Roll your Dob out and observe. No lifting. No disassembly.
Dobsonian telescopes deliver incredible views — but moving them is a chore. Whether you have an 8" starter scope or a 14" light bucket, we have a mobility solution that fits your telescope and your budget. From bolt-on caster kits to complete rolling platforms with leveling screws and pneumatic tires.
The Dobsonian Dilemma
Dobsonians are the best value in amateur astronomy — huge aperture, simple design, incredible views. But they have one serious problem: they're heavy and awkward to move.
An 8" Dob is manageable. A 10" is a two-trip operation. A 12" or larger? You're carrying a tube the size of a water heater and a base made of particleboard that weighs 30-50 lbs on its own. Most Dob owners admit they observe less than they want to simply because the setup and teardown is exhausting.
Adding wheels to your Dobsonian changes everything. Roll it out of the garage, lock the casters, and start observing. Roll it back in when you're done. You'll observe more often because getting started takes 30 seconds instead of 15 minutes.
Choose Your Dobsonian Mobility Solution
We offer four different approaches depending on your telescope size, terrain, and budget. From a simple bolt-on caster kit to a complete rolling platform with leveling screws.

Sky Trekker: The Complete Platform
The Sky Trekker is a purpose-built rolling platform for Dobsonian telescopes. Unlike bolt-on caster kits, the Sky Trekker is a stand-alone base that your Dob sits on — no drilling into your telescope required. Built-in leveling screws let you dial in a perfectly level base on any surface.
Sky Trekker Sizing Guide
Sky Trekker sizing is based on the center-of-foot to center-of-foot (cof-to-cof) distance on the bottom of your Dobsonian's ground board. Flip the rocker box upside down and measure between the centers of any two feet.
Sky Trekker 200 — $499
Fits cof-to-cof distances of 10.875"–12.0" or 14.3"–15.4"
Known compatible telescopes:
Meade LightBridge 8", Orion SkyQuest XT8, Celestron StarHopper 8", and similar 8" Dobsonians with matching foot spacing.

The Ez-Glide is a user-installable caster kit that permanently adds smooth-rolling wheels to the base of any wooden-base Dobsonian telescope. At $199, it's the most affordable way to add mobility to your Dob — and it fits virtually every brand on the market.
Key Features
- Rigid steel mounting plates — high tensile strength steel is 2.7× stiffer than aluminum, reducing vibration. UV-stable textured black powder coating.
- Universal compatibility — fits virtually any wooden-base Dob including Apertura, Zhumell, Celestron, Sky-Watcher, Orion, Meade, and Antares.
- Locking casters — 5" polyurethane casters with locking brakes. Optional Total Lock upgrade locks both wheel and swivel.
- ~7" eyepiece height increase — reduces bending, more ergonomic viewing especially for smaller Dobs.
- Complete kit — steel mounting plates, casters, self-tapping screws, cap screws. You provide a Phillips screwdriver and 7/16" wrench.
Ez-Glide vs. Apertura Roll Easy Kit
Both are bolt-on Dobsonian telescope wheel kits, but the Ez-Glide was designed to work with any Dob — not just one brand.

Triangle Style Wheeley Bars
The Triangle Style is an open-center Wheeley Bar designed specifically for 8", 10", and 12" Dobsonians. The open center accommodates Dobsonians with digital setting circles (DSCs) or encoders mounted on the bottom of the ground board — a feature most other wheeley bar solutions don't account for.
Comes standard with 2.5" locking caster wheels. Optional upgrades include 5" casters (raises the mount 6-3/8" off the ground) and leveling screws with hardware.

Who Uses Dobsonian Wheeley Bars
Backyard Visual Observers
If your Dob lives in the garage, a wheeley bar is the difference between observing twice a month and observing twice a week. Roll out to the driveway, lock the wheels, and start scanning the sky. Observers from the Texas Hill Country to suburban backyards in the Northeast and Pacific Northwest rely on wheeley bars to make their Dobs accessible on any clear night.
Star Party Regulars
Unload your Dob at the site, set it on the wheeley bar, and roll it to your observing spot. Popular at events from the Texas Star Party and Okie-Tex to the Winter Star Party in the Florida Keys and dark sky gatherings across the Appalachians.
Schools & Astronomy Clubs
Club and school Dobsonians that live in storage closets become usable in minutes when they're on wheels. No more needing the one volunteer who knows how to carry the scope without dropping it. Roll it out, observe, roll it back. Schools and clubs across the country use wheeley bars to make their equipment accessible to more people.
Accessibility-Minded Observers
The added height from casters (5-7") raises the eyepiece to a more ergonomic position, reducing back strain and bending — especially valuable for smaller Dobs where the eyepiece sits uncomfortably low. Combined with the elimination of heavy lifting, wheeley bars make Dobsonian astronomy accessible to observers of all physical abilities.
What Dob Owners Are Saying
"I often find myself looking up to see conditions that would be perfect for a quick impromptu session, only to decide against it when I consider having to lug everything out and then back in. The wheeley bar eliminated that entirely."
"Roll your scope out of storage to your observing area, level it, and begin observing. The process takes just a minute and is nearly effortless. I observe so much more often now."
"The steel mounting plates are noticeably stiffer than aluminum. Less vibration when you bump the scope, which matters when you're tracking objects at high magnification."
Surface & Terrain Considerations
Hard Surfaces (Concrete, Pavement, Patio)
All four Dobsonian mobility solutions work on hard, smooth surfaces. Standard polyurethane and rubber casters roll smoothly on concrete garage floors, driveways, and patios. This is the most common use case for Dob owners who observe from home.
Uneven Ground (Grass, Dirt, Gravel)
For off-pavement observing, the Sky Trekker is the recommended solution — its larger wheels and built-in leveling screws handle uneven terrain far better than bolt-on casters. The Ez-Glide's 5" polyurethane casters are designed for smooth surfaces and are not ideal for rough ground.
